Which UK city has the most security conscious residents?

A new study by home security retailer, safe.co.uk, has analysed national sales data across product ranges such as CCTV, alarms and locks, revealing that as a nation, our average spend has increased by 12% year on year.

According to the findings, sales of home security products per capita are the highest in Leicester, with homeowners in the East Midlands city increasing their year on year sales by 86%. Preston and Liverpool came in second and third for highest sales figures.

In stark contrast, Brighton and Cambridge are buying the least, with less than one piece of kit being bought per thousand people. The below lists reveal which cities are buying the most and least security products.

Year on year increases in sales figures show that Preston (150%), Glasgow (106%) and Leeds (90%) have shifted their buying habits and become more security conscious.

Latest crime figures show that burglary is on the rise, yet Coventry, which has one of the highest rates of burglary per capita, has seen the second highest reduction (26%) in security products bought, year on year. Other cities found to be buying less home security despite high burglary rates are Manchester and Leeds, which are both in the top 10 most burgled cities in the UK.

Experts are urging us to consider updating our home security to combat the rise in opportunistic burglars.

Anthony Neary, managing director of safe.co.uk, said: “It’s true that burglaries increase in the winter months, but the arrival of lighter evenings shouldn’t mean we drop our defences. What’s worrying from our study is that some of the cities we looked at have high burglary rates, yet sales of security products are low or even decreasing year on year in those areas. Investing in home security drastically reduces our chances of becoming a victim of crime so we can’t stress its importance enough.”
